The relationship between Prince Harry and his brother, Prince William, has seen its fair share of challenges. Harry has been candid about their family dynamics in his book and various interviews, which included comments about William’s children. This has reportedly caused a stir with William and Kate, particularly due to Harry’s remarks about Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte.
The connection between the brothers has been strained for years, with the likelihood of a reunion appearing slim. Harry and William were once much closer; when Harry became an uncle to Prince George, everything seemed harmonious.

However, as Harry describes in his book, “Spare,” things took a drastic shift, impacting his bond with William and his sister-in-law, Kate. Later, Harry met Meghan, and their decision to step back from royal duties in 2020 added another layer of tension with William.
This move by Harry and Meghan didn’t sit well with William, evident from Harry’s strong words in “Spare” against several royal family members. Notably, Harry expressed concerns about his niece and nephew, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte.
Harry’s Concerns About ‘Spares’
Harry touched on the idea that, like him, they might also become “spares,” a term relating to being secondary to the firstborn, destined to ascend the throne. His fear is that their roles as “spares” could negatively impact their lives.
During a promotional interview with The Telegraph, Harry shared, “Though William and I have talked about it once or twice, and he has made it very clear to me that his kids are not my responsibility, I still feel a responsibility knowing that out of those three children, at least one will end up like me, the spare, and that hurts, that worries me.”
The Royal Family, and Prince William in particular, have maintained public silence on the matter. Yet, royal experts suggest that William is displeased with Harry discussing his children in public forums.

In OK! Magazine, former BBC royal correspondent Jenie Bond commented, “Harry has a huge chip on his shoulder about being a spare, and he doesn’t have to assume that William and Catherine’s children will feel the same as him.”
Bond further argued, “Look at the Duke of Edinburgh and particularly look at the Princess Royal, they didn’t feel like spares. They’ve proven through their actions that they don’t perceive themselves as second-class and have worked industriously nonetheless.
“Charlotte and Louis are poised to be significant influencers with enormous privilege and platforms, so they really don’t have to feel spare,” Bond concluded. “Just because Harry felt spare doesn’t mean his nieces and nephews will feel the same.”
Emphasizing Normalcy
Despite the succession order placing Prince George before his siblings, it does not undermine the importance of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. William and Kate are devoted to a more “modern” upbringing for their children, aiming to foster a sense of normalcy.
A source informed the Mirror of the ordinary nature within the household, noting, “People would be surprised to see how ordinary things are at Prince William and Kate’s home.”
“The children participate in setting the table, clearing their plates, and helping with chores around the house. There is no special treatment.”

William himself revealed in 2016 that he and Kate are raising their children as normally as possible. Speaking to the BBC, he expressed, “Within our family unit, we are a normal family. I love my children the same way any father does and I aspire for George to love me the same way any son loves his father. We are quite ordinary in that sense.”
