A father of three in the UK, Matt Allen, has shared his decision to live on benefits instead of pursuing a traditional job, sparking both interest and debate. While some might see his lifestyle as taking advantage of the system, Matt insists that is not the case.
Living in a council house in Brighton along with his family, Matt has openly stated that he sees no reason to seek full-time employment. He works only a few hours each week as a yoga instructor, believing that a typical 9-to-5 job just doesn’t suit him.
Appearing on the television show Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over, Matt’s family welcomed host Stacey Dooley to understand their unconventional way of living.
Matt elaborates on their decisions, such as allowing their children to make their own choices about eating and brushing their teeth. Additionally, family rules include co-sleeping and avoiding vaccines and mainstream medicine in favor of alternatives.
Regarding public funds, Matt mentions, “We don’t feel like we’re misusing the system. We have a modest impact on society and even save on certain government services.” He added that avoiding hospital births and skipping vaccines contribute to this balance.
When Stacey queried Matt about parents who work long hours to support their families, he suggested they spend more time with their children. “Working 45 or 50 hours a week isn’t part of my mindset,” he acknowledged.
Matt and his partner, Adele, also share glimpses of this lifestyle on Instagram, highlighting their choices. Adele mentioned they offer toothbrushes at home, albeit with non-fluoridated toothpaste, leaving brushing optional.
Additionally, the family revealed their eight-year-old hasn’t yet learned to write his name. They felt it’s not pressing, allowing him the freedom to learn at his pace.
“He can develop those skills when ready,” Adele explained. “It’s about personal growth, not meeting test criteria.”
The family’s story challenges conventional takes on work and life balance. What do you think about this approach? Is it practical or too unconventional? Feel free to share your thoughts!
